LEARN Color & Design for Glass

Interesting live & recorded lectures will include reverse engineering of the color and design of artists using glass in architecture, art, and media. You will then apply the concepts taught weekly in simple exercises (on paper) relevant to your work and interests. You can redesign previous favorite works or design new projects or build out a series. Test your grasp and progress using  the online quiz sections (optional).  You may repeat the course and access material for up to 1 year. These are the course outcomes:

  1. BE ABLE to REPEAT YOUR SUCCESSES applying the principles & elements of color & design in your studio and mind.
  2. EMPHASIS ON GLASS  will be incorporated into each lecture: as a material, color & design concept, workability, limitations (budget, knowledge) and opportunities (reactive glass).
  3. YOUR ART PRACTICE will be the focus of lectures, handouts/videos, assignment parameters, and the merging of content & context. Studies may be based on other artists if preferred

Taught by Melanie Stewart MFA & Shaundra Toy PMP  (bios are a bottom of page)

General Outline for Course

Weeks 1 & 2:  COLOR FOUNDATION

By the end of week 2 you will have a solid understanding of the color characteristics  hue, saturation, value and how that relates to mood & feeling in design.

Weeks 3 & 4:  COLOR HARMONY

How we organize colors into schemes and by key is the next building block. By the end of week 4 you will understand why and how we make color decisions combining color schemes (employing hue, saturation and value) as a first step part of the design process.

Weeks 5 & 6: COMPOSITION & LAYOUT in glass.

You will learn the structural components in design: edges, line, sight-lines, mass and movement in conjunction with best practices for the distribution of color and its  mass. By the end of week 6 you will use color to further push compositions you made in week 5

Weeks 7 & 8:   DESIGN is PLANNING

An introduction on AI tools will be included as part of the design process along side traditional methods & practices. The emphasis on the last segment is getting very limber with the design process so decisions are more fun than mystery.

OPTIONAL Week 9  - Date TBD (a month or so later)

SHOW & TELL in the STUDIO:  bring a cocktail, coffee, snack, your dog ( but not your kids or other half) and share (or not) your works, insights, next steps.

Course Completion Knowledge:

You will know yourself better as an artist and as person. You will have insights in glass about more than just color, but mood, price, opportunities and some preemptive overarching gotchas. You will have a broader color & design vocabulary, new frameworks and processes to bring you more deliberately towards your goals. You will have tried on some systems to see what fits you best. If you show up, you are certain  to create faster with more confidence a more informed design, which eventually should lead to a more satisfying art practice and more professionally polished pieces.

Melanie Stewart BFA, MFA

Melanie is the lead instructor and  taught Color and Design, (Art 2D) and 3D at the University of California Santa Cruz and the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising ("FIDM") in San Francisco, where she was a favorite instructor. She also owned a luxury kitchen and bath design studio in Toronto, has remodeled extensively several homes and even built a pool. She has worked in transparent resin since 1990s and began working in glass in 2018, studying under Tim Carey and Narcissus Quagliata since 2021.

Shaundra Toy, PMP

Shaundra has thirty years in color for global brand print with Kodak and Pantone.  Currently she works in AI and will be presenting a workshop on AI for artists and creatives.  She will deliver advanced modules on light and color. Her clients love her because she love's to see the client's light bulbs go on.

Both are thoughtful and knowledgeable about fused glass as they began together in 2018. It's been a lot of fun for both of us as we both have steep color backgrounds (Melanie from art and higher education teaching, Shaundra from analog to digital color technology and education at Pantone and Kodak) ) fun and have walked the walk in the glass studio - which now has 9 kilns. Part of the studio includes an outdoor poolside gallery. This studio and gallery will serve as the location for video  lessons and related content.
